Yesterday, was a good day. I mean I was rooting against the Steelers, but
Sunday was a good day. I’m in short supply of drummers & lead guitar players these days, so I’ve been having to change the instrumentation around more than normal to make it work, but I’m discovering I like the change it brings. Since “worship” tunes are all relatively similar in chords, arrangement, & lyrical content, to change the instrumentation is a nice option for bringing a bit of musical variety. I’ve also noticed I can hear the congregation singing, and they are hearing each other more, when the drums & amps aren’t blaring. That said, I’m looking forward to the full band next Sunday. But with just Piano, Acoustic, two female Vocalists and myself, here is the set we sang.

Thanks for sending this my way Brody.
It is great to see the different sets listed. I think it will be interesting to see songs appear in multiple sets, that I haven’t heard. I’m sure there will always be songs I haven’t heard or done yet. But if I see something new, appearing in multiple sets, I’ll want to check it out, and you might too!

I was tinkering with my Guild Semi-Hollow Body Electric Guitar and 69′ Fender Band Master amp this week & my Sans Amp pedal and it made me want to lead this last sunday with it. And with that in mind, here is the set I came up with; first three songs electric , last three acoustic:

All Creatures Of Our God & King- Hymn
Grace- Phil Wickham
Be The Centre- Michael Frye
(sermon)
I Will Rise- Tomlin, Giglio, Cash & Reeves
Agnus Dei- Michael W. Smith
Yes You Have- Leeland & Bronlee

I’m a fan of Pedro The Lion, so I’ve arranged this hymn in that style with a cool little instrumental that I’m sure I’ve stolen from somebody. You can listen and download a free copy of it from my myspace page and let me know who I’m “borrowing” it from.

The rest of the set was fine. My highlight was playing the new Tomlin song for the first time (surprise). I think the church was most engaged during Agnus Dei. What song engaged you last weekend?

I’ll be leading worship again this Wednesday night at Crossroads so I put this set together for Elevation on Sunday to be used there as well. It’s kind of like using the same term paper for two different classes, …not that I ever did that. I’m just trying to get the most out of the work I do. Energy conservation, it’s very green of me.

Here’s the set:
Made To Worship – Chris Tomlin
Hosanna – Paul Baloche & Brenton Brown
Send Revival, Start With Me – Matt Redman
How Great Is Our God – Chris Tomlin
(Sermon)
Better Is One Day – Matt Redman
Wonderful Cross (Hymn) – Arr. By Chris Tomlin & Matt Redman

As you can see this is pretty much a Tomlin/ Redman love fest here. What can I say, they are my main guys. Again, wanting to put together a set of fairly familiar songs, I seem to lean pretty heavy on these guys. Obviously, Tomlin is approaching that Steven Curtis Chapman status, where the general Christian audience are familiar with his work. But as for Redman, (and it used to be this way with Tomlin), if I was playing a CD (now I’ve dated myself) for a non-worship-team crowd, people would be like, “oh he does this song too?”

As a whole, I thought the set was great because it made it easy for people to jump right in and worship God. And wouldn’t you say that’s the whole point? Would you? No, seriously it’s a question, what do you think the whole point of playing music in church is?

It was good to be back at Elevation yesterday. I heard Elijah Stephen did a fine job filling in for me the week before, which I’m thankful for. Having been out of town for so long, and not having much prep time. I wanted to keep the worship set for church fairly simply and I really just wanted to enjoy the music and focus on leading people into worship. So here is the set I went with:

The Everlasting – Damian Horne (that’s me)
Marvelous Light – Charlie Hall
Hallelujah Jesus – Evan Wickham
Holy is the Lord – Chris Tomlin
You Are My King (Amazing Love) Billy Foote
Grace – Phil Wickham
Sing, Sing, Sing – Chris Tomlin

So, The Everlasting, is the oldest song on my new album, Practice of the Presence. I wrote it the day before my 2nd daughter Macie, was born. Took a bunch of imagery from Isaiah 40, and put it into a song that people seem to enjoy.

Wanted aother an up-tempo song in the Key of A, hadn’t done Marvelous Light in a while, fun song that ended up really tying in with the message.

I am really surprised that Evan Wickham hasn’t blow up yet, this album, Mysterious Things, from 2006 is great with some fantastic tunes for corp. worship.

Holy is the Lord = Christian Anthem.

You are my King = Christian Power Ballad, just continuing with a working formula here.

Grace, is a nice song, I know some might think it’s a mental stretch to sing to Grace, but I think people are smart enough to appreciate the lyric and make the connection.

Sing, Sing, Sing, token four on the floor driving Chris Tomlin song to close out the service. I did have to instruct the audience they needed to clap double time not just the the 2’s and 4’s. I hate having to tell people how to clap to the rhythm, but sometimes it just has to be done.
