Context Part Deux

Colossians 3:16-19

16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. 17 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

As a worship pastor, my brain seems to chime anytime I come across scripture that talks about singing, hymns, and songs. So upon reading Colossians 3 today, it was no surprise that these verses popped out to me. In fact, the first devotional (Parson to Person) that I wrote for Crossroads Church was derived from this passage. But I can’t stop thinking about this “context” thing that I discussed earlier this week. Here’s the exact definition:

con·text

1. The part of a text or statement that surrounds a particular word or passage and determines its meaning. 2. The circumstances in which an event occurs; a setting.

So with that in mind, let’s look at the example here in the verse that follows the passage above.  Col.3:18 – Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.
Now, if that was my tattoo or the wall painting displayed in my house, it wouldn’t convey the complete intended message when it’s taken out of context. I’m not saying it’s not truthful or beneficial for teaching. But it is admittedly out of context.  Ok now add in Col.3:19 – Husbands, love your wives, and do not be harsh with them.
Just these 2 verses now paired back to back starts to communicate more of the message. Now go read all of Colossians 3 and you’ll see how it all fits together.
Context. It’s so important that we’re reading our bible, taking in the complete Gospel and not just living off of the soundbites.
I appreciated the comment I got on Facebook from my friend Mariesha on the earlier post regarding scripture tattoos. – “I don’t think there’s anything wrong with a little reminder from God on an arm just as long as your arm is not all of God’s word that you’re reading.”
Well said.
Let me close by reiterating that it is through the power of the Holy Spirit in us that makes any comprehension of this possible. And this is only  because of the redemptive work of Christ on the Cross.  It is not as simple as A+B=C. By spending time with God & His Word  we can grow into a deeper understanding, knowledge, and love in the Lord.
