"Jesus Wants To Save Christians"
1.30.2009Comment
Stayed up late finishing Rob Bell’s latest book, “Jesus Wants to Save Christians”. I’ve read all his books, long-time fan of the Nooma Videos, and saw him speak at the Crest Theater in Sacramento a couple years ago. I really connect with his communication & artistic style.
And I dig
The way
He spaces
Things
Out.
But that’s just a style, I appreciate his ability to communicate Old Testament History so well. I know he’s not popular in some theological circles for various reasons. And I get some of it, but mostly I’m on board with what he’s got to say. There’s one part at the end of the second to last chapter that just floored me. I literally got chills. He’s talking about, how is today’s teenager with all of there privileges going to get interested in the Jesus that spoke to the suffering, and he says,
“tell them that there’s blood on the door post of the universe.”
Powerful.
I recommend the book. Anyone else out there read it? Agree? Disagree?
Songs I Sang
1.29.2009Comment
Welcome to the Thursday morning edition of Songs You Sang. I know many of
you already posted the songs you sang on Sunday on Brody’s Blog, and we will
resume that series next Monday. But since I’ve been invited to lead
worship/music every other Wednesday night at Crossroads Church, I have a set
list to post today. Normally, I’ll use the same set I did a few days before
at Elevation, but since I didn’t play last Sunday, I’m posting it today.
Last night was cool. We changed up the instrumentation a bit by going more
“unplugged style” with the Upright Bass, Mandolin, Cajun/ Percussion,
Acoustic, & just one vocal. Kind of a street corner type of vibe. My
favorite song in the set was “Divine Romance” by Mr. Phil Wickham.
Here’s the set:
He Is Exalted – Twila Paris
Jesus Messiah – Chris Tomlin
Lord, Let Your Glory Fall- Matt Redman
Amazing Grace – Hymn
(Sermon)
Divine Romance – Phil Wickham
Hallelujah Jesus – Evan Wickham
So if you went to church last night, what songs did you sing?
Pre-School Doctrine

My 4-year old daughter, Macie, told my wife Andrea this morning in the bathroom that “she didn’t need to brush her teeth because it wasn’t in the Bible.” Besides the obvious commandment about obeying your father and mother, I’m pretty sure there’s some similar Leviticus Law that deals with oral hygiene, so I think I can win this debate.
So what doctrinal conclusions have your children declared lately?
Do Not Worry
1.27.2009CommentI have to comment on the verse for Oswald’s devotional today, because I was just talking to a friend yesterday about this.
“Do not worry about your life…” – Matthew 6:25.
We were talking about church, work, and the economy, and I was telling him that I didn’t really have much work booked for this next month, but that I wasn’t too worried about it, and that things would be okay. Now, I wasn’t saying that because, I had some stuff in the works that might come through. I said it, because I’ve been here before, and God always brings us through it. Admittedly, it’s not that I haven’t been thinking about how am I going to pay my bills, or what do I need to cut out this month, or cut back. I feel like I need to be responsible, but I don’t want to doubt God’s word when it comes to this. This isn’t easy, but it’s what we’re supposed to do.
When I got home in the afternoon, I received one email requesting my services next week, and a voicemail from another client wanting me later in the month. Not that this is all the work I need, but today I read my devotional, which really tied into the theme of yesterday’s devotional, that if God cares for the birds, he will care for us. Again, this is tough, and I was blessed to see this provision in amount of days. How much more is our faith tested when it’s a matter of months, or years.
How is your faith being tested and what verses have given you recent comfort?

Thanks for sending this my way Brody. It’s funny that we’re starting this on the weekend I was gone and didn’t play, so I’ll have to post-pone my set until Thursday as I’ll be leading worship this Wednesday night at Crossroads.
It is great to see the different sets listed. I think it will be interesting to see songs appear in multiple sets, that I haven’t heard. I’m sure there will always be songs I haven’t heard or done yet. But if I see something new, appearing in multiple sets, I’ll want to check it out, and you might too!
Name That Conference
1.23.2009Comment
I’ve been in monterey all week working a conference so I apologize for not writing.
So here it is: C.A.R.
Can you guess what it stands for? No googling. I’ll give you a hint, it’s the largest trade association in my state, and maybe the country! … And I’m ready to go home now please…one more day…
Invocation

I’m out of town right now for a conference, and was not able to sit and watch the entire inauguration yesterday. I did get to stop for a moment and catch a portion. It happened to be right when Pastor Rick Warren got up to pray. I was really moved by two particular parts. When he wove in the “Lord’s Prayer” as Jesus taught us how we should pray, and when Rick prayed this all in the many names of Jesus. Not the many universal names that different religions use for god, but all in the name of Jesus. What a witness for Christ. Very moving for me. Was it moving for you?
Songs I Sang On Sunday

I was tinkering with my Guild Semi-Hollow Body Electric Guitar and 69′ Fender Band Master amp this week & my Sans Amp pedal and it made me want to lead this last sunday with it. And with that in mind, here is the set I came up with; first three songs electric , last three acoustic:
All Creatures Of Our God & King- Hymn
Grace- Phil Wickham
Be The Centre- Michael Frye
(sermon)
I Will Rise- Tomlin, Giglio, Cash & Reeves
Agnus Dei- Michael W. Smith
Yes You Have- Leeland & Bronlee
I’m a fan of Pedro The Lion, so I’ve arranged this hymn in that style with a cool little instrumental that I’m sure I’ve stolen from somebody. You can listen and download a free copy of it from my myspace page and let me know who I’m “borrowing” it from.
The rest of the set was fine. My highlight was playing the new Tomlin song for the first time (surprise). I think the church was most engaged during Agnus Dei. What song engaged you last weekend?
Name That Conference

As some of you might know, when I’m not playing music I often do free-lance audio/ visual production work. Most often in nice hotels or convention centers but not the most exciting content.? So, to help keep me entertained, I’ve decided to start a little game on here called “Name That Conference”. First up, Today’s conference: NCPGA. Can you guess the acronym? No googling!
